the president and mitt romney in the same city giving dueling foreign policy speeches. the romney campaign season opening in the wake of the terror attack in libya questions about the president's mideast policy. now as you note both men here in the battleground of ohio today sort of shadowing one another, domestic issues more the focus of course here in the midwest. 18 electoral votes in ohio. no republican has won the white house without winning this state first. as you know "the new york times" cbs battleground poll shows the president up 10 points. 53 to 4 3-point it. there is a lot of talk about republicans that there has been an over sam blink of democratic voters and the votes are being screwed against the romney campaign. nonetheless if you look at "the new york times" battleground poll, for example, previously the president only had a single digit lead here in ohio, now up to a double digit lead. even if it's off a little bit the bottom line is the trajectory is favoring the president at least for now arthel. arthel: on top of all that i should say the economy there in ohio seems t

not just on what romney says are ineffectual policies like the president's healthcare law and stimulus packages, but the cost of those policies as compared to romney's own perscriptions that call for smaller less expensive government. for the president what he's going to try to do is say look, maybe things aren't so great but it is partly the fault of george w. bush and the republicans who were in office prior to the democrats taking control in 2009, so we need time to fix it, and by the way, the president will also say that he wants to increase taxes on people like mitt romney to help pay down some of that debt. >> reporter: we just put of that graphic there showing the $16 trillion of debt and there are so many digits it almost doesn't fit on the tv screen across the screen there, as you can see. but haven't americans in some way become number to astronomical numbers? how serious is this in. >> they have become number. is it the new normal this massive spilling of red ink but it raises three problems which i don't think the nation has got even to grips with yet. number one our econom

's -- krauthammer talks about -- romney does talk about foreign policy, a 20th century entitlement system, he talks about america and the need to be unapologetic. he talks about all these things. the problem romney has is he can't go a week talking about these things because he is tripping over his own words and gaffes whether the clint eastwood moment or running to criticize obama for the libya attacks and each and every time he tries to build momentum around these themes, build a larger place to get obama out -- he over shadows. >> you just said theme. that is what charles krauthammer says. he said if there were an over arching thing mitt romney was carrying from foreign policy -- >> you can only build that theme if you do it day in and day out and obama has done his theme which is romney is this rich guy who is going to outsource everything. he's been tripped up every now and then but by and large has been consistent. mitt romney has been his own worst enemy. >> that is the problem kelly. they don't have a big over arching theme as charles krauthammer says that carries them through a week where

romney says there is a model he's promised a veto. the gerry before the radical policy prescription called deportation, the idea of making life so miserable here that immigrants are literally purged from the country so it's hurt badly but hispanics. the strategy, that strategy means as you point out in your excellent paper, really the southwest is out of reach in large part because of this. they've pulled off the mexico. they have a shot in colorado and nevada but if the turnout is high not much. so thankfully the hispanic strategy that the romney strategy has been let's talk about the economy. the cuban americans and puerto ricans and in hopes we can peel off just enough of them because maybe that will be the trick. the problem is in florida of the hispanic electorate has changed quite significantly. the fastest-growing group are dimond puerto rican latin american immigrants for whom immigration is a defining issue in a litmus test issue. roughly a third now. so i suspect he's going to have a hard time winning florida in part because of the changing demographics of the latino elect
